Who is Heartwings Gardening?
Matt Miller founded Heartwings Gardening in 2018. He brings more than 20+ years of landscaping experience, a unique artistic eye, and a love of nature to his work. With the dream of honoring his artistic vision and working in a way that offered sustainability for his family, Matt started his own company. From the beginning, Matt jumped right in and found many great opportunities. Almost all Heartwings Gardening projects come from word-of-mouth referrals. That says a lot. Delivering on the trust given him, Matt has done projects of all size and scope—from quick repairs to installations lasting several months.
What sets Matt apart from other landscapers is that he is practical while always keeping aesthetics in mind—a very rare combination. He has a rich knowledge of how plants grow and where they look best. Matt is a service professional, both a good communicator and a safe and intelligent worker. You’ll hear others describe him as reliable, honest, and reasonable.
You might be surprised Heartwings Gardening is a Sole Proprietorship with Matt as owner, operator, and labor. He can fix almost anything broken in your yard, and sometimes will even make you laugh with his easy humor. Above all, Matt is a life-long artist. This is the one thing current and past clients can tell from his work. Finished projects have that extra touch that makes each space feel special.

Prior to founding Heartwings Gardening, Matt worked with Richard Hedal at Hedahl Landscape, Deck, and Patio. His time there provided many learning opportunities and a constant stream of projects. Matt also spent 7 + years taking care of parks and building trails for the Bainbridge Island Metro Park and Recreation District. He has done landscape maintenance for several outfits and worked in large nurseries. This long pathway to starting a business allowed Matt to refine his artistic vision, further develop technical skills, and begin to understand what customers need and want the most.
Five years in, Heartwings Gardening has become a vehicle for expression of art through landscaping. Matt’s hope is that people will be able to go into their new spaces and immediately connect with nature. Matt has a rare gift of creating such spaces and he is grateful for the ability to bring out what is special about each place.
We live on a beautiful and amazing planet. We are all part of, and responsible for, taking care of it. Matt believes that when we feel a connection to nature, we are more likely to make the kind of changes our world needs.
The Heartwings Gardening extended family knows the real reason you are checking out this website—to find more about Director of Human Relations, our dog, Coteote. Although he is 12 years old, Coteote loves meeting new people and playing fetch. He is a faithful companion who brings much joy to Matt and many others. People always ask about his breed, but the best we can offer is some kind of cattle dog mix.
